Apatite

L’Apatite fait honneur à son nom. Il y a environ 200 ans, en Norvège, on croyait que l’Apatite bleue trouvée près de la ville de Drammen était une sorte de Lapis-Lazuli. C’est justement pour ces confusions liées à son apparence trompeuse que le minéralogiste allemand Abraham Gottlob Werner lui a attribué le nom d’Apatite en 1786. Il a également nommé la variété verte de l’Apatite “pierre d’asperge” parce qu’il croyait qu’il s’agissait d’un minéral à part. Cette erreur a encore perduré un certain temps jusqu’à ce que des chimistes français et allemands constatent grâce à des tests approfondis qu’il s’agissait de toutes sortes d’Apatites.

Apatite lives up to its name. About 200 years ago in Norway, the blue apatite found near the town of Drammen was thought to be a kind of Lapis Lazuli. It was precisely because of these confusions related to its deceptive appearance that the German mineralogist Abraham Gottlob Werner gave it the name Apatite in 1786. He also named the green variety of Apatite “asparagus stone” because he thought it was a separate mineral. This mistake continued for some time until French and German chemists discovered through extensive testing that it was all kinds of Apatite.
